Jones: Governor falsely claims support of black community

CHICAGO – State Senator Emil Jones, III (D-Chicago) is issuing a response to misleading claims made by the governor during his Juneteenth remarks today.
Gov. Bruce Rauner touted helping the black community, especially black businesses. Rauner has actually largely ignored black-owned businesses during his term.
“I was disgusted by the governor’s claims that he’s been a pillar within the black community, when in reality, he’s done various things that have in fact hurt our people,” said Jones.
Some areas that have suffered under Gov. Rauner include:
- Chicago State University—Budget stalemate caused 400 layoffs
- Safety-net hospitals—Rauner sought to reduce Medicaid spending and discontinue some projects
- He also refused to issue federal dollars to hospitals even after a federal judge issued a ruling
- Hospitals like Roseland Community Hospital were forced to sue to receive the funding
- Child Care Assistance Program—nearly gutted by cuts made by the Rauner administration
- Minority Procurement—state issuing fewer contracts to minority-owned contractors than its goals
- Food stamps—Aid cut to tens of thousands of households as a state agency transitioned to a new computer system
“The governor has had three years to take the lead on black issues,” said Jones. “Yet, he waits until an election year to acknowledge our community and problems. It’s disgraceful, and I will not stand by as he tries to take credit for progress within the black community.”
Jones votes to advance bipartisan budget package

State Senator Emil Jones, III (D-Chicago) offered the following statement after the Senate voted to advance a bipartisan balanced budget:
“Today, we came together and voted for a budget deal after finally reaching a bipartisan agreement that will allow us to fund critical government programs and services.
“The full-year package we passed includes funds to education, MAP grants, Medicaid and childcare services. All of these programs are essential and should be appropriately funded to provide stability to the people we serve.
“For the health of Illinois families, we extended funding to health insurance and the Medicaid Program. Earlier this year, the governor proposed a 4 percent cut to Medicaid, which would have caused more bleeding and suffering to our most vulnerable populations. When negotiating at the bargaining table, I and my colleagues worked to ensure safety-net hospitals were protected and received their fair share in the budget deal.
“Safety-nets, unlike other hospitals, lose millions of dollars, as they take Medicaid patients almost exclusively, and Medicaid only covers 50 to 70 percent of the cost of providing care.
“I am also proud to say we have included and increased funding for P-12 education. Chicago Public Schools will reap the benefits under the new funding formula.
“The investments of the bipartisan budget deal will positively impact the lives of Illinois children and families and I was happy to support the measure.”

Secretary of State Jesse White has announced more than $15 million in funding to libraries statewide through Illinois Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants.
Per Capita grants help fund library expenses such as materials, personnel, equipment, electronic access, telecommunications and technology. Equalization Aid grants help qualifying public libraries with a low library tax base ensure a minimum level of funding for library services.
“Libraries are important cornerstones of a healthy community that provide valuable services for people of all walks of life,” Senator Emil Jones, III (D-Chicago) said. “These grants will help make sure libraries remain a lifeline to my district and provide my constituents access to all sorts of information about world. A library is often the only readily available source of information needed by people and it is crucial that we provide them the necessary funds to better assist the public.”
Libraries in Jones’ district will receive almost $150,000 in funding under the grants. The following libraries are receiving funds:

Jones: The governor cannot continue to cut his way out of the mess he created

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Emil Jones, III (D-Chicago) released the following statement after the governor’s budget address:
“Unfortunately, the governor’s spending plan for this year balances the budget on the backs of the poor, elderly, mentally ill and working families. He cannot continue to cut his way out of the mess he created. The governor’s attempt to solve the state’s budget deficit with cuts to critical services disproportionately affects minority communities.
To say the least, his plan slashes funding for youth employment, after school and addiction treatment programs when these programs have been established to aide our most vulnerable communities. What we should have heard from the governor was a plan to address the crisis he created within the health care system.
Instead, he proposed a four percent cut to Medicaid which is totally unacceptable when hospitals are already suffering. The governor has expressed publicly that he does not have control of this state and I refuse to stand by and watch my community suffer at the hands of Governor Rauner and his useless political agenda.”
